Marcus Thompson

Counsellor

Marcus Thompson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 14 years of experience in addiction recovery and dual diagnosis treatment. He holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University and has worked in various settings including inpatient rehabilitation facilities, outpatient clinics, and private practice.

His journey into addiction counseling was partly inspired by his own family’s experience with substance abuse, giving him both professional expertise and personal insight into the devastation addiction causes and the possibility of recovery. Marcus’s therapeutic approach is firmly grounded in the strengths-based perspective. Rather than focusing solely on problems and pathology, he helps clients identify their inherent strengths, resilience, and resources.

He believes that people struggling with addiction are not defined by their substance use but are complex individuals with gifts, talents, and potential. This reframing often provides clients with the hope and motivation needed to sustain recovery efforts through difficult times. He specializes in treating co-occurring disorders, recognizing that addiction rarely exists in isolation.

Many of his clients also struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder. Marcus uses an integrated treatment model that addresses both the substance use and the underlying mental health conditions simultaneously. He’s trained in motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based relapse prevention.

His sessions help clients understand their triggers, develop healthy coping mechanisms, build supportive relationships, and create meaningful lives in recovery. Marcus also facilitates group therapy sessions and family education programs. He recognizes that addiction affects entire family systems and that healing needs to extend beyond the individual.

He teaches family members about enabling behaviors, healthy boundaries, and how to support their loved one’s recovery without sacrificing their own wellbeing. His compassionate yet direct communication style helps clients and families break through denial and make genuine changes. Many former clients credit Marcus with saving their lives and helping them rediscover their purpose and potential.
